Il grande architetto portoghese Álvaro Siza, Premio Pritzker nel 1992, ha deciso recentemente di mettere alla prova le proprie abilità progettuali anche nel campo del design per consegnarci, dopo circa un anno e mezzo di lavoro, un originale nuovo orologio da polso, disegnato in due versioni diverse, entrambe disponibili in due differenti dimensioni. Siza, vincitore di numerosi prestigiosi premi internazionali e autore di molte rinomate opere di architettura, che hanno ispirato diverse generazioni di progettisti, si è calato con estrema professionalità in questa affascinante impresa. E l’ha fatto alla sua maniera, disegnando un orologio da polso, affinché “sembri un orologio, allo stesso modo in cui penso che una sedia debba ‘sembrare’ una sedia e un’automobile debba ‘sembrare’ un’automobile”, aggiungendo infine: “perché ciò che è nuovo non deve essere un’aggressione”.

Il risultato è un bellissimo oggetto, anzi quattro, che rispecchiano appieno il credo progettuale dell’architetto nato a Matosinhos nel 1933: un orologio allo stesso tempo “semplice”, con un design sobrio ed essenziale, ma anche elegante e attento ai dettagli, con le sue giuste proporzioni e dimensioni geometriche, con un’accurata scelta dei materiali impiegati, di alta qualità e naturali (vetro zaffiro, acciaio inossidabile, pelle), e, volutamente, né sfarzoso né ostentativo.
Le due versioni dell’orologio – “White” e “Mirror” – differiscono soprattutto nel disegno delle lancette e nel colore del cinturino (marrone o nero), di cui uno suggerisce un suo uso più “sportivo”, quotidiano, mentre l’altro sembrerebbe più adatto per certe occasioni più “formali”. Ciascuna viene offerta in due dimensioni, rispettivamente con un diametro di 35 e di 30 mm.
Con questo raffinato, e allo stesso modo semplice, strumento di misurazione del tempo il maestro portoghese ci regala, come sua eredità creativa, un oggetto elegante e prezioso in grado di trascendere spazio e tempo.

Tutto il processo creativo e progettuale si è protratto per circa diciotto mesi, dai primi schizzi su carta sino ai modelli di studio e prototipi realizzati, durante i quali il premio Pritzker si è dimostrato “una delle persone con cui è stato più facile lavorare in assoluto”, citando le parole di Filipe Almeida, direttore di Cauny, l’azienda svizzera che ha prodotto l’orologio e imbastito tutta l’operazione.
La filosofia di Cauny, marchio fondato nel 1927 a La Chaux-de-Fonds, risulta valida tutt’ora: “produrre orologi dal design originale, con materiali di alta qualità e un tocco di raffinatezza, accessibili a tutti coloro che aspirano a portare un pezzo distintivo dell’orologeria al proprio polso”.

Infine, il prezzo unico dell’orologio, prodotto in numero limitato: 175 euro, per ciascuno dei 4 modelli, fortemente caldeggiato dal maestro portoghese, dimostrando così, ancora una volta, tutta la sua grande generosità e attenzione verso il prossimo.

Álvaro Siza designs two wristwatches

The great Portuguese architect Álvaro Siza, Pritzker Prize winner in 1992, recently decided to put his design skills to the test and, after about a year and a half of work, delivered us an original new wristwatch, designed in two different versions, both available in two different sizes.

Siza, winner of numerous prestigious international prizes and author of many renowned works of architecture, which have inspired several generations of designers, has taken on this fascinating task with extreme professionalism. And he has done this in his own way, designing a wristwatch so that “it looks like a watch, in the same way that I think a chair should ‘look’ like a chair and a car should ‘look’ like a car”, finally adding: “because what is new must not be an aggression”.

The result is a beautiful object, or rather four, that fully reflect the design credo of the architect born in Matosinhos in 1933: a watch that is at once ‘simple’, with a sober and essential design, but also elegant and attentive to detail, with its correct proportions and geometric dimensions, with a careful choice of high quality and natural materials used (sapphire crystal, stainless steel, leather), and, deliberately, neither opulent nor ostentatious.
The two versions of the wristwatch – “White” and “Mirror” – differ mainly in the design of the hands and in the colour of the strap (brown or black), one of which suggests a more ‘sporty’, casual and everyday-use, while the other would seem more suitable for certain more ‘formal’ occasions. Each is offered in two sizes, with a diameter of 35 and 30 mm respectively.
With this refined, yet simple instrument for measuring time, the Portuguese master gifts us, as his creative legacy, with an elegant and precious object capable of transcending space and time.

The whole creative and design process lasted about eighteen months, from the first sketches on paper to the study models and prototypes made, during which the Pritzker Prize winner proved to be “one of the easiest people to work with”, in the words of Filipe Almeida, director of Cauny, the Swiss company that produced the watch and set up the entire operation.
The philosophy of Cauny, a brand founded in 1927 in La Chaux-de-Fonds, is still valid today: “to produce watches of original design, with high-quality materials and a touch of refinement, accessible to all those who aspire to wear a distinctive piece of watchmaking on their wrist”.

Finally, the unique price of the wristwatch, produced in a limited number: 175 euros, for each of the 4 models, strongly advocated by the Portuguese master, thus demonstrating, once again, all his great generosity and concern for others.
