The design of the new cemetery is based on existing qualities of the area – treetops of an elderly chestnut alley, horizons of surrounding fields, existing cemetery wall, chapel of St. Wenceslas, and axis of a trail leading to the rocky lookout towards Goat ridges.

We define the cemetery area through structures, principles, and materials; dividing the space by a grid of cemetery walls and paths enables the easy growth of the cemetery according to capacity needs in the future while maintaining the general concept. The landscape is regulated, yet leaving some areas less defined, aiming to integrate the cemetery gardens in the surrounding fields and meadows over time.

By the entrance, a utility house for the cemetery keeper is designed, incorporating public bathrooms as well. New parking spots are defined. The chapel of St. Wenceslas is reopened as a spiritual shelter for anyone seeking it. The grove behind the chapel is dedicated to alternative burial methods – placing the ashes by the roots of the trees or scattering them on the meadow.
Concept.
Horizontality, destigmatization of the cemetery space, transparency of the cemetery wall, vistas, and integration in the landscape are the main themes defining this newly created public space.

Cimitero Giardino, Praga-Suchdol, Repubblica Ceca
Il progetto del nuovo cimitero si basa sulle caratteristiche esistenti dell’area: le chiome di un viale di castagni secolari, gli orizzonti dei campi circostanti, il muro del cimitero esistente, la cappella di San Venceslao e l’asse di un sentiero che conduce al belvedere roccioso verso i rilievi della Capra.

L’area del cimitero viene definita attraverso strutture, princìpi e materiali; la suddivisione dello spazio con una griglia di muri e sentieri consente di far crescere facilmente il cimitero in base alle esigenze future, mantenendo la struttura generale. Pur lasciando alcune aree meno definite, il paesaggio è regolato con l’obiettivo di integrare gradualmente i giardini del cimitero nei campi e nei prati circostanti.

Vicino all’ingresso è stata progettata una casa di servizio per il custode del cimitero, che include anche bagni pubblici. Sono stati predisposti nuovi posti auto. La cappella di San Venceslao viene riaperta come rifugio spirituale per chiunque lo desideri. Il boschetto dietro la cappella è dedicato a metodi di sepoltura alternativi: le ceneri vengono deposte alle radici degli alberi o sparse sul prato.

Orizzontalità, destigmatizzazione dello spazio cimiteriale, trasparenza del muro del cimitero, vedute e integrazione nel paesaggio sono i temi principali che definiscono questo nuovo spazio pubblico.

Zahrady se hřbitovem, Praha-Suchdol, Česká republika
Vítězný soutěžní návrh nového hřbitova se odvíjí od stávajících kvalit území – korun vzrostlých stromů, horizonty polního lánu, ohradní zdi, kaple sv. Václava a hlavní osy stezky s alejí pokračující k výhledu z Kozích hřbetů. Definujeme areál pomocí struktur, principů a materiálů. Rozdělení území pomocí systémové mřížky hřbitovních zdí a cest umožňuje snazší přizpůsobování růstu hřbitova aktuálním kapacitním požadavkům při zachování konceptu celku.

Stávající krajinu regulujeme a necháváme jí prostor pro přirozený vývoj v čase. U vstupu vzniká novostavba zázemí správce hřbitova s veřejným WC a parkováním. Kapli sv. Václava otevíráme všem příchozím jako úkryt před okolním světem. Lesní porost za kaplí vyhrazujeme pro alternativní způsoby pohřbívání a rozptyl na loučce.
Horizontalita, destigmatizace hřbitovního místa, zrušení klasické hřbitovní zdi, průhledy, plynulé napojení areálu hřbitova do volné krajiny – to jsou hlavní témata nově vzniklého veřejného prostoru.
