All’inizio del mese di giugno, a Londra è stato inaugurato il 22esimo Serpentine Pavilion, il padiglione temporaneo che contraddistingue le estati culturali della metropoli inglese. Progettato dall’architetta franco-libanese Lina Ghotmeh, il Padiglione, intitolato À table, è un chiaro invito a sedersi insieme a condividere le idee, le gioie, le preoccupazioni, i ricordi culturali e le storie che ci uniscono, magari mentre si condivide un pasto a tavola.

À table is an invitation to dwell together in the same space and around the same table. It is an encouragement to enter into a dialogue, to convene and to think about how we could reinstate and reestablish our relationship to nature and to Earth.
The Earth that embraces us is our first source of sustenance; without it, we living beings, could not survive. Rethinking primarily what and how much we eat — how we ‘consume’, how we inhabit and how we weave our relationships to one another and the living world — moves us towards a more sustainable, eco-systemic living. Our ‘cuisine’ grounds us home; it reminds us how linked we are to the climates in which we grew up. As a Mediterranean woman, born and raised in Beirut, and living in Paris, I feel a deep belonging to our ground – from the buried yet weathering archaeologies of past civilisations to the embedded living world that spurs green life to sprout from every crack in the streets.

In my practice as an architect, I excavate to design. I learn from the traces of the past and listen to the voices of our ancestors as well as those of our living world to create every new place. These voices vividly resonate with future structures as ways to influence and challenge tomorrow’s architecture.
In today’s changing times, this Pavilion offers a celebratory space. It is endowed with a table, around which we will sit together in a modest low structure and in an atmosphere reminiscent of Toguna huts of the Dogon people in Mali, West Africa, designed to bring all members of a community together in discussion. Here we can eat, work, play, meet, talk, rethink and decide.

Built predominantly with bio-sourced and low-carbon materials, this wooden structure emerges in harmony with its site. Appearing like a skeleton, timber ribs are arranged radially to support a suspended pleated roof. Echoing the structures of tree leaves, the Pavilion’s canopy embraces the nature of the park in which it emerges. Reminding us of the many lives blossoming beneath our feet, the concave lines of its perimeter are drawn from the forms in the stems and canopies of adjacent trees.
While rooted in its place and welcoming the space of the park with its open gallery-like envelope, the Pavilion invites us into its intimate interior where light shimmers through the fretted panels enveloping its heart. Growing as an adaptable system, A table is a lightweight structure that can be easily disassembled and reassembled. It will live beyond its Serpentine site all while holding the memory of its original ground.

À table è un invito a convivere nello stesso spazio e intorno alla stessa tavola. È uno stimolo a entrare in dialogo, a riunirsi e a riflettere su come potremmo ripristinare e ristabilire il nostro rapporto con la natura e la Terra.
La Terra che ci abbraccia è la nostra prima fonte di sostentamento; senza di essa, noi esseri viventi non potremmo sopravvivere. Ripensare principalmente ciò che mangiamo e quanto mangiamo – come “consumiamo”, come abitiamo e come intrecciamo le nostre relazioni reciproche e con il mondo vivente – ci spinge verso una vita più sostenibile ed ecosistemica. La nostra “cucina” ci radica a casa; ci ricorda quanto siamo legati ai climi in cui siamo cresciuti. Come donna mediterranea, nata e cresciuta a Beirut e residente a Parigi, sento un profondo legame con la nostra terra – dalle archeologie sepolte ma che resistono al tempo delle civiltà passate al mondo vivente incastonato che fa germogliare vita verde da ogni crepa delle strade.

Nella mia pratica come architetta, scavo per progettare. Imparo dalle tracce del passato e ascolto le voci dei nostri antenati così come quelle del nostro mondo vivente per creare ogni nuovo luogo. Queste voci risuonano vividamente con le strutture future come modi per influenzare e sfidare l’architettura di domani.
In tempi di cambiamento come quelli odierni, questo Padiglione offre uno spazio celebrativo. È dotato di un tavolo, intorno al quale ci siederemo insieme in una modesta struttura bassa e in un’atmosfera che ricorda le capanne Toguna del popolo Dogon in Mali, Africa occidentale, progettate per riunire in discussione tutti i membri di una comunità. Qui possiamo mangiare, lavorare, giocare, incontrarci, parlare, ripensare e decidere.

Costruita principalmente con materiali biologici e a bassa emissione di carbonio, questa struttura in legno emerge in armonia con il suo sito. Apparendo come uno scheletro, le costole di legno sono disposte radialmente per sostenere un tetto a pieghe sospeso. Evocando le strutture delle foglie degli alberi, la copertura del Padiglione abbraccia la natura del parco in cui si trova. Ricordandoci delle molte vite che sbocciano sotto i nostri piedi, le linee concave del suo perimetro sono tratte dalle forme dei tronchi e delle chiome degli alberi adiacenti.
Pur radicato nel suo luogo e accogliendo lo spazio del parco con la sua struttura aperta simile a una galleria, il Padiglione ci invita nel suo interno intimo, dove la luce luccica attraverso i pannelli intagliati che avvolgono il suo cuore. Crescendo come un sistema adattabile, À table è una struttura leggera che può essere facilmente smontata e rimontata. Vivrà oltre il suo sito al Serpentine tenendo viva la memoria della sua terra originale.
